DHCP Versus Static IP

IP stands for Internet Protocol. An IP is used as an identification number, or address, when accessing a network, such as the Internet.

DHCP stands for Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol. The DHCP server will automatically assign an IP address and DNS server information. Because the IP address being used changes periodically, DHCP is more secure compared to Static IP.

A Static IP is an address that is programmed into the machine that never changes. This is mainly used for web, mail or network servers where it is a neccessity to have a permanent Internet address.

Our DHCP servers are set up to authenticate, or authorize, by MAC addresses. It is almost like having to dial up to the Internet without having to dial.

Most of our DSL customers are setup on DHCP. It is easier to set up, more secure and less expensive.
